Losing Society’s Productivity Standards: Self-Care & Creation

You have to clean the cobwebs out of the garage before you can make art in there.

You have to clear the cobwebs out of your mind before you can make art in there, too.

On day 3 of my 28-day writing journey I want to speak on one thing I am learning about the role of self-care in the outcome of creation.

Losing Society’s Standards

Society has written a script for what’s productive and what’s not. As you know, it usually starts with waking up at 4am.

Every. Time.

For those who have chosen a self-directed career, or are working towards one now–as a creator your final outcomes are dependent on your state of being.

You can’t make good things if you don’t have the right tools.

Something that I have been learning and experimenting with recently has been putting what works best for me before what others deem admirable. It begins with stating simple facts: I am not a 4am chronotype, if I woke up at 4am I would simply not do my best work no matter how motivated I was.

Learning to work with and embrace who I am, instead of fit myself into a mold, enhances my work and sense of being.

There is a lot of noise in the self-help world. You will create better things by leaning into your individuality, not trying to stifle it. Work hard, but in ways that may seem unconventional to others. Life is relative. And I’m finding that it’s really not a big deal.

Take a minute to sweep some dusty corners today.

Thank you for reading,

Olivia
