I learned a new term yesterday, called Akrasia.
Used to describe the general feeling of: “I should be doing X” and then not acting in your own best interest.
Apparently it’s different than procrastination.
You know you should wake up and follow your morning routine, but in the moment you choose to sleep another half an hour.
You know that you should go workout, but it’s been a rough day. In the moment you choose to go home to chill out.
After hearing about Akrasia through The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman, it changed my perspective on how to handle these everyday moments. Our brains gravitate towards immediate gratification. Always choosing momentary comfort over long-term rewards. We’re simply wired that way.
But when I began researching into this topic further I found that the single, best way to combat akrasia is by working with this fact instead of against it. Instead of playing the battle of wills, choosing to make desired tasks as easy as possible will build up resistance and get you further in the long-run.
Running 0.1 mi is better than 0.
